Jason Wu A/W 2014 New York Fashion Week – 7th Feb
There is no other way to describe this collection apart from sheik, old-school 1980’s glamour and really what every woman would love it be seen in. Jason Wu wowed the NYFW crowd with autumn/winter 2014 collection, filled with satin, fur, snake skin and embellished textures, dipped into dark navy, purple, lilacs and burgundy shades. From start to finish the collection showed pure elegance, with flattering shapes, masculine jackets, and draping fabrics.
Starting with black, the collection entered with style, showing masculine shaped simple blazer and working trousers, with flattering, feminine embellished top. The outfit showed true power of a woman, by still looking sexy in block shaped layering. From then on, we saw long broad coats, oversized collars and then slowly but surely more and more flesh was shown.
The collection soon expanded by showcasing strapless tops, and long satin gowns, held up by tiny straps. It’s about keeping it simple, elegant, and your old-school glamour, with being a woman that powers all. From then on more and more colours made an appearance giving the collection and warm, delicate colour palette of nudes, light pinks, burgundy and navy.
Flowing to watch, this showed Wu’s true style of embracing women, yet keeping it classy and full of character, with a diversity of high and low neck shapes. Fabrics were cut to shape the body, with complicated twists and panels, giving shape within the garment rather than showing off a tight waistline. Sequins weren’t missed out, showing this collection can we worked day and night. Delicately placed, the sequins were put into gradual shapes to the fabric, and also lines over netted fabric, creating some coverage.
A favourite from the collection are the small fur clutches and large fur patches on some of the jackets, which came in colours of navy, black and a dark teal. The fur clutches gave the collection, a fun, playful twist and supporting the fur patches on the heavy masculine jackets, also giving a warm winter atmosphere. Another was ranges of zips seen on some of the heavy jackets, still keeping a manly, heavy working style, clashing with the elegant concept. With that the clearly cut-out and shaped long gowns throughout the collection, kept the Jason Wu creativity and roots flowing making the whole show true to his own vision.
Overall the collection showed clear clashing and working of two different body shapes, feminine and broad. It’s given the season an old school Hollywood-glam feel, with the modern twist and trend of heavy coats. It’s a true favourite to New York Fashion Week so far, and has got m eager to see if any other designers have followed a similar path for the 2014 autumn/winter season.
